Public Education

I want to keep public education public. We are on a slippery slope when it comes to the public educational system in Wisconsin. The voucher system nearly was expanded to a great extent in the last legislative session. This is an issue that is not going to go away quietly.

Some people hold that Wisconsin's schools are failing. I do not agree. I think we have some schools that are doing poorly largely because of the pressures of poverty. In effect, we are failing our schools by not tackling poverty. One of the Band-Aids for a failing school is to use vouchers. Simply move the children to another school miles away from their home area. Research says it is not clear that vouchers actually work. Many students end up back in their original school. Vouchers are taking public money and moving it to the private system. This takes money out the school system that desperately needs it, the inner city system.

A quality public educational system good attracts employers to settle here or start businesses here because employers know they can get a supply of well educated employees.

A public educational system ensures that everyone will benefit from a great education and everyone gets the opportunity to be lifted up out of poverty. We need to be careful with the voucher system as that is a back door to privatization.
